چکیده

Systems close to bifurcations can be used as small-signal amplifiers. Biophysical measurements suggest that the active amplifiers present in the mammalian cochlea are systems close to a Hopf bifurcation. The pure tone and transient signal output of our electronic hearing sensor based on this observation provides output that is fully compatible with the electrophysiological data from the mammalian cochlea. In particular, it reproduces all salient nonlinear effects displayed by the cochlea. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2768204

Therapeutic potential of cell therapy in the repair of hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons: review article

The mammalian cochlea is a highly complex structure which contains several cells, including sensory receptor or hair cells. The main function of the cochlear hair cells is to convert the mechanical vibrations of the sound into electrical signals, then these signals travel to the brain along the auditory nerve. Auditory hair cells in some amphibians, reptiles, fish, and birds can regenerate or r...

From Hearing to Listening: Design and Properties of an Actively Tunable Electronic Hearing Sensor

An important step towards understanding the working principles of the mammalian hearing sensor is the concept of an active cochlear amplifier. Theoretical arguments and physiological measurements suggest that the active cochlear amplifiers originate from systems close to a Hopf bifurcation. Efforts to model the mammalian hearing sensor on these grounds have, however, either had problems in repr...

A statistical model for prediction of radiation induced sensorineural hearing loss in radiotherapy of brain

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to develop a statistical model for prediction of radiation induced sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) induced by radiotherapy in patients with brain tumors.   Materials and Methods: CT scan of 18 patients (10 males and 8 females) with brain tumor who were referred to Radiation Center of Milad Hospital in Isfahan in 2...

V 4 . 22 A CMOS VLSI Cochlea

An engineered system that hears, such as a speech recognizer, can be designed by modeling the cochlea, or inner ear, and higher levels of the auditory nervous system. To be useful in such a system, a model of the cochlea should incorporate a variety of known effects, such as an asymmetric lowpass/bandpass response at each output channel, a short ringing time, and active adaptation to a wide ran...

Mammalian cochlea as a physics guided evolution-optimized hearing sensor

Nonlinear physics plays an essential role in hearing. We demonstrate on a mesoscopic description level that during the evolutionary perfection of the hearing sensor, nonlinear physics led to the unique design of the cochlea observed in mammals, and that this design requests as a consequence the perception of pitch. Our insight challenges the view that mostly genetics is responsible for the unif...
